On one hand, we are dealing with a huge simplification. An online referral can be obtained via teleconsultation, telephone consultation, or through a form available on medical platforms. There is no need to bother going to the clinic just to pick up a piece of paper. Everything goes to the Internet Patient Account, from where the referral can easily be downloaded, shared, or archived. But behind this convenience lie some questions. Can everyone obtain it, how does it work in practice, when can the doctor refuse, and when should they definitely issue a referral? And most importantly: what to do next once we get it?<\/p>\n
In practice, an e-referral is an electronic document issued by the doctor via the P1 system, which goes directly to a central database. The same one accessible to medical facilities, laboratories, and diagnostic labs. The patient does not receive a paper slip but a referral code. Usually in the form of a 4-digit number, which can be received by SMS, email, or checked by logging into their Internet Patient Account. In many cases, a teleconsultation will suffice, especially if the doctor knows the patient’s history, has access to prior test results, and does not see the need for a physical exam. Moreover, more and more online medical platforms offer the possibility of obtaining a referral after filling out a detailed health form. The doctor then decides based on it whether and what tests to order. Sounds like a utopia? If we want to change the place of examination, we must go to the new facility, which will invalidate the previous assignment in the system.
